Digital Twins in Action: Expert article shows new approaches to environmentally responsible traffic management

Intelligent mobility requires a precise image of reality. Carsten Dalaff (Project Coordination) and Dr. Alexander Sohr (Group Leader Mobility and Traffic Management) from the DLR - German Aerospace Center, Institute of Transportation Systems Technology show how digital twins can help to intelligently combine traffic and environmental data and thus open up new potential for environmentally sensitive mobility management in their technical article in the magazine Straßenverkehrstechnik (issue 06/2025).

The focus is on the development of two specialized digital twins for traffic and the environment using the example of the AIAMO pilot region of Leipzig, which can be used individually or jointly for relevant issues. By combining current traffic data, environmental measurements, AI-based hotspot analyses and dynamic simulations, a powerful, data-driven control system is being created. The aim is to identify congestion hotspots at an early stage and develop targeted measures for fast and effective traffic management.
The article shows how digital twins can be used to map complex relationships between traffic and air quality - and the specific benefits this brings for local authorities: a sound basis for decision-making, faster response times and sustainable, environmentally friendly management of urban mobility.
