AIAMO - Artificial Intelligence And Mobility

AIAMO is a project funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation which 14 partners are working together under the consortium leadership of ITS Germany e.V. to develop AI-based environmental and mobility management in order to make mobility more efficient, resource-saving, safe and needs-based.

What is it?

AIAMO strives for cross-sector, data-sovereign information acquisition by networking mobility providers. The special feature here is the first-time application of AI-based processes in mobility management strategies, so that a demand-oriented design of mobility offers is created. Data collection in the field of mobility is to be simplified so that clear conclusions can be drawn with regard to environmentally oriented and multimodal mobility management. The special feature here is the focus on easy market access for SMEs and a large number of cities.

Why?

One of the biggest challenges currently facing society is ensuring reliable mobility services while prioritising climate protection. However, innovations or new legal framework conditions can never completely solve problems. What has been missing so far is an accessible concept for linking different mobility services - especially for SMEs, municipalities and smaller cities - that not only looks at individual concepts, but also offers integrated solutions and a low barrier to entry. The use of AI in mobility management strategies also does not yet exist.

How?

AIAMO bundels experts from the fields of AI, mobility and the environment who pool their experience to create a trustworthy AI-based application. To realise its goals, AIAMO provides an integration zone for environmental and mobility management as well as public transport data. AI-based applications enable interaction between infrastructure, vehicles and mobility participants. Further work packages are dedicated to the identification and development of usable data sources, a digital twin of traffic and the environment, AI-based mobility management for public transport/IV and environmentally sensitive traffic management for ground-based transport.

11.12.2025 - Scientific publication: AI-supported traffic and mobility management

A scientific publication by Alexander Sohr and Michael Ortgiese from Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) and Dr. Katharina Peine and Thomas Hornig from highQ Computerlösungen GmbH has been published in the scientific journal Strassenverkehrstechnik (issue 11/25). In it, the authors report on their work as part of the AIAMO research project, which is developing modular, AI- based systems for integrated traffic and mobility management. The core of the project is AIAMOnexus. [more...]

09.12.2025 - New expert article: Vehicle data for clean air and smooth traffic

In Straßenverkehrstechnik (issue 11/25), Niklas Nieswand (Theis Consult GmbH) and Dominik Salles (FKFS Stuttgart) show how floating car data (FCD) is being used in the AIAMO project to analyse traffic and emissions in a highly targeted manner. FCD provides position, speed and driving behaviour information from real vehicles on the road. This allows traffic jams, frequent braking or congested sections of road to be identified. The project uses the data for live traffic analyses, emission maps and hotspot analyses. At the same time, it is incorporated into simulations and AI models. [more...]

05.12.2025 - 5th AIAMOcamp – Making an impact and looking to the future

The entire project consortium met at the project office headquarters in Aachen for the 5th AIAMOcamp. This time, the focus was on the impact of AIAMO and looking to the future. AIAMO should not remain a flagship project that fades away after completion – we want to show ways in which what has been achieved can be sustained and further developed. The goal is clear: AIAMO should continue to grow. [More...]

ITS Germany wins international ITS Nationals Award 2025 for AIAMO

ITS Germany e.V. has been honoured with the international National Policy Champion Award for the AIAMO research project. The award was presented at the ITS Nationals Awards 2025 in Warsaw to the industry association, which coordinates the project as consortium leader.

The international jury praised AIAMO as a pioneering example of the strategic use of artificial intelligence in mobility management and the active shaping of national guidelines in this area.

‘The award is a significant recognition for the entire German ITS industry,’ said Markus Wartha, President of ITS Germany e.V. ‘It shows that in Germany we are not only developing technological innovations, but also helping to shape the framework conditions for the mobility of the future.’

The AIAMO project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Public Service, develops AI-based solutions to make mobility services more efficient, sustainable and user-oriented – thus making an important contribution to data-based, networked mobility in Germany and Europe.
