New technical article: More than just a green wave: How AI is being used to optimise traffic flows and emissions in Landau in der Pfalz

The latest technical article in Straßenverkehrstechnik (issue 9/25) takes a closer look at what AIAMO can achieve in a medium-sized town with less than 100,000 inhabitants and the challenges faced by a municipality that combines urban dynamics with a rural environment.

An important component of AIAMO is the creation of a digital twin of traffic – a data-based representation of the current traffic situation that is continuously updated and calibrated with the help of AI. It maps both supply(road network, traffic lights, restrictions) and demand (traffic volumes, source-destination relationships, choice of transport mode). The results are important parameters such as traffic loads, travel times and speeds. What makes AIAMO special is that the digital twin is automatically calibrated using AI based on historical traffic data. In later stages of development, the digital twin will be used to simulate various alternative courses of action or trigger automated measures.

In addition, the Offset Optimizer system is being piloted along the east-west axis in Landau i. d. Pfalz.
This is a method for dynamically coordinating traffic lights along heavily congested corridors. The aim is to adjust green phase offsets at successive intersections so that there are as few stops as possible
and traffic flows more smoothly.

Another application of AI within AIAMO in Landau i. d. Pfalz is barrier forecasting. In collaboration with subcontractor rms GmbH, a method is being tested that can be used to predict the times at which railway barriers will close based on combined timetable data and traffic measurements. Reliable predictions will enable traffic control systems to respond specifically to upcoming closures in the future.
