In medium-sized towns such as Landau in der Pfalz, numerous commuter movements, heavily frequented main axes and critical bottlenecks lead to traffic jams – a scenario familiar to many towns. A recent technical article in Kommune Digital Forum shows how artificial intelligence enables environmentally sensitive mobility management and makes traffic flow easier to plan and regulate.
As a pilot region in the AIAMO research project, Landau is trialling the development of an AI-based digital twin for traffic, short-term forecasts for the early detection of critical traffic situations, and adaptive and self-learning traffic light systems along heavily congested main traffic arteries.

Another focus is on the AI-supported analysis of movement data from modern sensor technology. This enables predictive traffic control and targeted prioritisation of public transport, pedestrian and bicycle traffic. This approach is complemented by connecting mobility and environmental data to reduce emissions and ensure the efficiency of the transport network.
The article shows how AIAMO, as a scalable, modular system, supports local authorities in gradually developing existing traffic and mobility infrastructures to be more efficient, future-proof and data-based – supported by AI-based forecasts, analysis methods and adaptive control.
