New expert article on Springer Professional: Floating car data for AI-based traffic models
Niklas Niewand
Connected vehicles now offer far more than just mobility. They continuously generate data on, among other things, position, speed and driving dynamics. Used correctly, this information can help to better understand traffic flows, identify bottlenecks earlier and plan measures more effectively.
A new professional article published by Springer Professional highlights the potential this holds for cities and regions. The authors are AIAMO experts Niklas Nieswand from Theis Consult GmbH and Dominik Salles from FKFS.
In the AIAMO project, floating car data is used alongside other traffic, environmental and infrastructure data for AI-supported analyses. It provides a valuable contribution for applications such as digital twins, forecasts or simulation-based assessments in environmentally sensitive mobility management.
The article demonstrates how journey times can be derived from vehicle-based movement data, recurring bottlenecks identified, or conspicuous braking and acceleration patterns detected. This yields valuable insights into the causes of congestion, critical network sections and emission-relevant hotspots. In this way, floating car data supports the data-driven assessment and prioritisation of measures in cities and regions.
