New AIAMO expert article: From field testing to municipal practice

Dr. Thomas Trabert
Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Schmid

The July issue of Straßenverkehrstechnik (07/2026) features the latest article in the AIAMO expertise series. Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Schmid (SWARCO) and Dr Thomas Trabert (Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ) demonstrate how AI-based applications for environmentally sensitive mobility management in the AIAMO pilot regions are making the transition from research to municipal practice.

Whilst the first digital solutions have been undergoing pilot testing in Leipzig since early June 2026, the applications are being gradually handed over to the city of Landau. The article demonstrates how the developed systems are being evaluated under real-world conditions, further refined and integrated into existing municipal processes.

The focus is on environmentally sensitive traffic management using an environmental monitoring network, digital twins and data-driven analyses to improve air quality, as well as AI-based methods for intelligent traffic management and the optimisation of traffic flows.

The article highlights how AIAMO is shaping the transfer of research findings into municipal applications. The building blocks developed within the project form a transferable toolkit for AI-supported, environmentally sensitive mobility management, which can also be made available to other cities and regions in the future.

In this way, AIAMO supports municipalities in managing traffic flows more efficiently, reducing emissions and complying with the EU air quality limits that will come into force from 2030.
