AI, DeepTech and digital sovereignty: Europe’s foundation for the mobility of tomorrow
Europe’s mobility of the future will not be determined solely by the capabilities of artificial intelligence. Equally important is the question of whom controls the underlying infrastructure, data and AI models. Markus Wartha, President of ITS Germany e. V. and consortium leader of the AIAMO research project, explains why digital sovereignty and DeepTech are among the key prerequisites for sustainable traffic and mobility management in the latest technical article in Straßenverkehrstechnik 08/2026.
He describes how AIAMOnexus is creating a common technical foundation for the use of artificial intelligence in European mobility management. Rather than building new data platforms, AIAMO connects existing systems and data spaces such as the Mobilithek and the European Mobility Data Space (EMDS), harmonises mobility an environmental data to ensure interoperability, and thereby lays the groundwork for trustworthy AI applications in line with European regulatory frameworks.
The article highlights why digital sovereignty will be one of the key success factors for smart mobility in the future – ranging from control over infrastructure, data and AI models to cybersecurity, governance and open standards. At the same time, it demonstrates how these fundamentals are already being put into practice today in the AIAMO research project’s pilot regions of Leipzig and Landau in the Palatinate.
