Monitoring air quality for environmentally sensitive mobility management – scientific article by the UFZ in the magazine ‘Immissionsschutz’

A recent scientific article by Timo Houben, Ema Vosgerau, Jan Bumberger and Thomas Trabert from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig and Elmar Brockfeld from the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) has been published in the science magazine 'Immissionsschutz'. The authors report on their work as part of the AIAMO research project, which is investigating and testing solutions for AI-based environmentally sensitive mobility management.

In the pilot region of Leipzig, a measuring network consisting of up to 50 sensors planned by the UFZ continuously records urban air quality. Initial analyses show significant peaks in nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter during rush hours and events – thus providing concrete starting points for reducing traffic-related emissions.

Particular attention is being paid to the networking of mobility services for SMEs, municipalities and smaller towns, as well as to the development of integrated concepts with low barriers to entry. The highly scalable environmental monitoring network and the corresponding data analysis form the basis for a digital twin that enables the municipality to implement well-founded measures to improve air quality and traffic management and, in the medium term, to comply with the EU air quality standards that will apply from 2030.

The article shows that the work of the project partners provides valuable insights and results for AI-supported, data-based approaches to urban mobility management.
