Expert article in “Logistik entdecken”: Making impact measurable

Dipl.-Inform. Volker Kraft
Dipl.-Ing. Katrin Scholz

What specific benefits do AI-based solutions bring to mobility, the environment and infrastructure? In their expert article in the magazine “Logistik entdecken” #27, Volker Kraft and Katrin Scholz from the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML explain how, as part of the AIAMO research project, they are systematically investigating and evaluating the impact of the applications developed.

Within the framework of the accompanying scientific research, they analyse the objectives, impacts and success factors of the approaches developed in AIAMO. The evaluation is based on an impact model that links the five ‘AIAMOimpacts’ with specific measures and measurable performance indicators. The so-called ‘KPI Tree’ makes it clear which measures contribute to which results and where interactions or conflicting objectives may arise.

The assessment considers not only traditional traffic indicators such as journey times or queue lengths, but also environmental impacts, data quality, user acceptance and the deployment of the systems developed. In the pilot regions of Leipzig and Landau in the Palatinate, research is being conducted into how the AIAMO solutions perform under real-world conditions.
This article highlights the importance of transparent evidence of effectiveness for the transfer of AI-supported solutions into local authority practice – and how scientific evaluation can help to create a sound basis for decision-making regarding their future deployment.
